What are the advantages of being a civil engineer?
Why Civil Engineering is to be done Advantages Dis Advantages
Mankind requires Food, Clothing and shelter and they are required as long as they exist. A civil engineer's role is essential in providing shelter and maintain the same. A civil engineer is irreplaceable. Sometimes I feel really feel that recession does not matter much for a Civil Engineer. When you construct house a civil engineer helps and again he helps for a periodical maintenance. No one else can substitute him. If he is passionate about his field, whatever he does becomes landmark and his signature. Blessed is that civil engineer in whose passionate creation stands tall a bridge or a house or a school or a building as a testament to his contribution to society beyond his lifetime. And what more advantages can one dream for...?
Advantages:
The first and the foremost advantage is that you are associated with tangible things. Large buildings ,group housing flyovers, dams, that later citizens of the country use and you feel proud of that.
Civil engineers are associated with large projects which runs in hundreds of cores and when you are heading such a big project it gives to confidence . You get to interact with labour to the most influential person connected with project. Hence as such you are so much exposed to the world that wherever you go there is always a comfort zone for you.
Civil engineers are connected with society and therefore are very social. A lot of people come to him for an adivce regarding construction of their home offices etc.
In the beginning you may not get well paid but later the salary increases and as you scale higher and if you have a caliber then there's no limit.
Another advantage is that you can also get into Govt sector after clearing IES . There are good departments like railways, CPWD and many other. Many PSU like BARC, IOCL, BPCL, NTPC,NHPC hire Civil Engineers.
Disadvantages:
you never know whether you will be able to reach for your wedding on time.
The construction industry in India is very unorganized sector. There are no shifts just like production industry. Duty hours vary from 10–12 hrs and you may continue at night also. There are many parties involved in construction and your work depends upon the performance of others. There are many disagreements between the parties. You have to struggle for maintaining quality as the contractor deployed would be least bothered for it. You will have to work in scorching heat with sun over your head and you counting steel of slab.
But in the end it's satisfying seeing your project standing tall. When you deliver the project it's a proud moment .
Now let’s move on some financial advantages.
- Your first salary may not be as much as computer science guys, but there is more room to enhance this salary. I mean, there is an issue about elder programmers in the industry. More experienced they are, harder to get a new job. In our industry, it is not an issue. The thing is, there are always a lot of jobs wherever you want to live.
- Different then other engineering disciplines, you can always start your own business. You can buy an empty lot, pay the architects to design the building, calculate the statics and start the construction. Think this situation for mechanical engineers for example. Their field is not that easy to start their own jobs.
These are what came to my mind at the first look. There are plenty of pros and cons about all disciplines. I love what I do, I can always suggest that to everyone.
